While Cunningham has been in the spotlight for her stance, she recently urged the media to shift the focus back to basketball. Perry responded on Wednesday by posting a video that slammed the guard for her comments, accusing her of endangering transgender individuals.
The controversy originated in July following an ESPN feature where Cunningham argued that young girls require protection and should not be forced to compete against biological men. She reinforced this position during a July 23 interview with The Athletic, reiterating that barring transgender athletes is necessary to safeguard young female competitors.
Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has emerged as a prominent critic of Cunningham’s views. On Saturday, Reeve characterized the ongoing debate as a fundamental human rights issue, asserting that every child deserves the right to participate in sports regardless of their gender. Prior to the Indiana Fever’s 108-100 defeat against the Minnesota Lynx, the two individuals met at halfcourt to discuss their conflicting perspectives.
On the court, Cunningham is currently averaging 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 48.2% from the field. She is scheduled to return to action this Thursday for a home game against the Las Vegas Aces.
