Atletico Madrid officially announced the signing of Danish defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon on Saturday. The 27-year-old has committed to the 2020/21 La Liga champions by signing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2031.
In a formal statement, Atletico lauded the midfielder’s “physical strength, his ability to win the ball back and his reading of the game.” Hjulmand has represented Denmark on 27 occasions, scoring one goal during his international career.
Hjulmand’s professional journey began in his homeland and Austria before he moved to Lecce in 2021. While in Italy, he achieved a significant milestone at age 23 by becoming the second-youngest player to captain a Serie A side, following only Francesco Totti at Roma.
Following his time in Italy, he joined Sporting. During his three seasons in Lisbon, he secured two Primeira Liga titles and the Portuguese Cup. Atletico’s recruitment continues this window, having already signed Spanish international left-back Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen, with Korean forward Lee Kang-in expected to arrive from Paris Saint-Germain.
