The Chennai Super Kings have officially named legendary former India left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach for the upcoming 2027 Indian Premier League season. This high-profile appointment marks a significant transition for the franchise, as Zaheer takes over the reins from Stephen Fleming, who concludes a remarkable 18-year tenure with the team. Fleming’s long association with the organization, where he served as a primary leader of the coaching staff, ended as he transitioned into a new role with England cricket, eventually being appointed as their men’s Test head coach in July.

Zaheer brings extensive post-playing experience to the role, having held various administrative and developmental positions since his final IPL appearance in 2017. His career trajectory saw him serve as the Director of Cricket Operations for the Mumbai Indians starting in 2019, followed by a transition into the role of head of global development for the franchise. Most recently, he acted as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2025 season before departing the team ahead of the following campaign. As a player, he proved his impact by featuring in 100 IPL matches, where he claimed 102 wickets at an average of 27.27, complementing a decorated international career that saw him collect 610 wickets across all formats for India.

Reflecting on his new appointment, Zaheer expressed enthusiasm for the challenge ahead, noting, “It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL.” He recalled his experiences facing the team as a player and shared his admiration for the passionate support at Chepauk, adding, “I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history.” Team owner Rupa Gurunath welcomed the hiring, highlighting that Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and talent for mentorship make him an essential asset for the team’s future development and stability.

The move received strong backing from the team’s leadership, with Managing Director KS Viswanathan praising Zaheer’s technical expertise. “Zaheer is a world-class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years,” Viswanathan stated. He emphasized that the former pacer was instrumental to India’s competitive success during the 2000s, concluding that he represents one of the finest minds in the sport today and that the franchise is eager to welcome him into the family. The report also notes that as a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests.
