Kimi Antonelli has etched his name into the history books, clinching the Formula 1 world championship in only his second season. The 20-year-old secured his first world title at the Mexico City Grand Prix, finishing in third place behind race winner Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.
By achieving this feat at 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli shattered the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel by three years and 67 days. Additionally, he became the first Italian driver to claim the F1 world title since Alberto Ascari accomplished the feat in 1953. Smashing Sebastian Vettel’s previous record for being the youngest champion by three years and 67 days, that was a secondary story on the day Antonelli made history.
The championship-clinching race was defined by high tension and a red-flag stoppage, which resulted in a 25-lap sprint to the finish. Amid the chaos, Antonelli maintained his composure. The closing stages saw a fierce tactical battle as Hamilton attempted to close the gap on Verstappen after the pair collided at the first chicane during the restart. Antonelli drove a composed race amid some hectic action involving the other front-runners in a grand prix interrupted by a red flag that led to a 25-lap sprint to the finish.
Hamilton ultimately found it impossible to overtake the Red Bull driver and expressed frustration after the race, citing the aggression shown by his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, during the opening lap as a key factor that cost him a potential victory.
The internal atmosphere at Ferrari reached a breaking point, with Leclerc’s aggressive maneuvers to seize the lead early in the race causing significant controversy and visible unhappiness within the team.
For Antonelli, the realization of his achievement was emotional. Over the radio during the slowing-down lap, he struggled to speak through tears and laughter, eventually composing himself to tell his team, “Thank you so much. We did it. We did it.”
This triumph marks a historic milestone for the sport, as Antonelli concludes a breakout season that he has effectively dominated, securing the championship with several races still remaining on the calendar.
