Early Beginnings and Natural Talent
Kimi Antonelli’s journey into the elite world of Formula 1 began long before he reached the cockpit of a race car. They could not possibly afford to pay for Kimi to take part in all the categories on the way to Formula 1. But Kimi immediately started to impress.
His father, Marco Antonelli, recalls that Kimi was essentially raised in the family business, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and scents of motorsport from the time he was just 15 days old. According to kimi from 15 days old was in the garage and heard the sound of the engine and the smell of the exhaust,”, Marco, who worked with his wife Veronica on their racing team business. Alongside Roberto Ravaglia and Steve Soper – stars at the time, another chance came up with BMW. The Antonellis were what Marco describes as “a normal family”. According to his full name is Andrea Kimi Antonelli and he, Last year that his close friends and family call him “Andrea”. At 15, Antonelli was ready to move up to cars, and, as a final preparation, did a couple of races in a karting category with gears. After which Antonelli moved full-time into cars, this was the end of 2021.
By the age of three, during the Christmas holidays, Kimi had already developed an obsessive drive for performance while using a home simulator Marco had provided.
Kimi would frequently sit on his father’s lap to control the steering, often demanding to keep driving even when his father was exhausted from long workdays.
Marco’s realization of his son’s rare potential occurred when Kimi was 10 years old at the Adria circuit in Italy. I suffered a lot for it,” Marco says. “And, of course, I was scared that my son [would] relive the same situation.
After a long day managing his own Lamborghini sports car team, Marco invited his son to drive. A former driver himself, asked his son: “Do you want to try the Lamborghini, it was the end of the day and Marco. In the end, I pushed like I was alone and I arrived at the braking point at the end of the straight, 320km/h, braked very hard and at the limit.
Strapped into the vehicle together, Marco handled the throttle while Kimi managed the steering and gear changes. Then I went on the throttle, Kimi finished the oversteer, changed gear, and went, kimi controlled the oversteer perfectly.
Despite being unable to clearly see the track ahead, Marco watched his son handle extreme high-speed maneuvers and oversteer with perfect control at speeds reaching 320km/h.
Marco later noted that seeing the video footage of his 10-year-old son handling such complex vehicle dynamics made him realize Kimi possessed something truly special.
The Challenge of Professional Racing
Despite his son’s obvious talent, Marco was initially hesitant about Kimi pursuing a career in professional racing. Having experienced the pressures and professional disappointments of his own career in the 1990s—where he was once close to becoming a DTM touring car driver before opportunities slipped away—Marco feared his son might face similar heartbreak. He was acutely aware that talent alone does not always guarantee a successful path in a sport where financial and political positioning are critical. According to i couldn’t see the track because he was in front of me with a helmet on,” Marco, Sport. “I could only see beside me the marker panels before each corner – 100m, 50m. I said: ‘OK, stop, because it has now become dangerous.

- Mentorship: Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff and trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin monitored his development closely, identifying him as a potential successor to Lewis Hamilton.
Transitioning to Formula 1
The path to Formula 1 was marked by both brilliance and pressure. Antonelli dominated the junior ranks, winning the 2022 Italian Formula 4 championship and the 2023 Formula Regional European Championship. However, the step up to the highest level brought intense scrutiny. Toto Wolff acknowledged that while there were undeniable moments of brilliance, Antonelli also faced difficult stretches, including a challenging nine-race period that tested his resolve. But then the team boss left and the opportunity evaporated, he tested for Alfa Romeo. Through 2022, he swept the board in various championships in Formula 4, and the same happened in Formula Regional in 2023. By the time he turned 20 in August, Kimi Antonelli had successfully navigated his debut seasons to become a world champion. His journey from a boy in a garage to the youngest champion in the sport’s history stands as a testament to both his innate driving ability and his capacity to respond to the high-stakes demands of modern Formula 1. It was a season in which Antonelli had ended up driving a kart with less power than those of his rivals. Gwen was impressed about this condition of power and driving in this category that Kimi did,” Marco says. “And maybe they understood that Kimi was a different child. On his debut, with minimal pre-event testing, he took pole position.
