Mumbai Indians have officially appointed Kieron Pollard as their head coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The former star all-rounder, who transitioned into a coaching role following his retirement from the league before the 2023 campaign, moves up to the top position after serving as the team’s batting coach for the past four years. Pollard replaces Mahela Jayawardene, who recently parted ways with the franchise. Before taking over the role of batting coach and has now been elevated to the top post, he last played in the 2022 season.
Pollard’s connection with the Mumbai organization spans over sixteen years, beginning when he was signed as a 22-year-old player in 2010. During his playing career with the team, he was a pivotal figure in five IPL title victories—in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020—alongside two CLT20 triumphs in 2011 and 2013. Across 189 IPL matches, he accumulated 3,412 runs at a strike rate of 147.32 and claimed 69 wickets. Having played 189 matches and scored 3412 runs at a strike-rate of 147.32, besides bagging 69 wickets, he boasts of a stellar record in the IPL.
Reflecting on his new appointment, Pollard stated, “It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me.” He expressed his readiness to build upon the team’s legacy while supporting player development and the growth of the squad, noting the responsibility that accompanies wearing the Blue and Gold colors. “I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate,” he added. “Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan.
Team owner Nita Ambani praised the appointment, remarking, “Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game.” She added that she is confident in his commitment and determination to lead the franchise into its next chapter.
Beyond his history with the Mumbai-based IPL side, the 39-year-old remains active in the global franchise circuit. He has represented sister franchises in the MLC, ILT20, and SA20, recently turning out for MI New York and the Trinbago Knight Riders. Furthermore, he was acquired by the Joburg Super Kings in the recent SA20 player auction for the 2027 season. As he settles into his new responsibilities, Pollard’s immediate priority will be working with the management to finalize player retentions ahead of the upcoming auction, scheduled to take place in Goa this December.
