Matthias Jaissle, who recently arrived at Newcastle United from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, began his tenure with a trophy-winning performance at the Mestalla Stadium. Despite defeating Valencia in his opening pre-season friendly, the manager remained grounded, stating, “We will not smash the locker room now and celebrate. We still have a lot to do.”
The match began poorly for the visitors, who conceded a curling goal to Filip Ugrinic just four minutes into the contest. The game grew increasingly physical, resulting in a red card for Valencia’s Jose Gaya following a dangerous tackle on Newcastle forward Anthony Elanga. Elanga was stretchered off the pitch, causing Jaissle to admit he was “in fear” for the player. However, the forward was later seen walking, and the injury is currently considered a minor shin bruise rather than a serious issue.
Newcastle maintained their composure despite the disruption, with substitute striker Yoane Wissa netting two goals to secure the result. New signings Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur, who joined from Hoffenheim and Ajax respectively, also delivered impressive performances after coming off the bench.
Reflecting on the victory, Jaissle noted the importance of building momentum, adding, “Winning games always helps to gain confidence.” He acknowledged the squad’s rigorous training schedule over the past week and confirmed that the players would receive two days of rest before resuming their preparations. “The players did well and there was a huge commitment to see in each session, so they really deserve two days off and then we start again,” he said.
