Olympic Gold Medallist Katy Marchant Announces Retirement

British cycling standout Katy Marchant has officially announced her retirement from the sport, marking the end of a decorated 13-year career. The 33-year-old cyclist, who recently capped her journey with a silver medal at this summer’s Commonwealth Games, confirmed that she felt the timing was right to step away from professional competition.

Marchant leaves a legacy defined by her performance at the 2024 Paris Games, where she was a pivotal part of the women’s team sprint trio that captured Britain’s first-ever Olympic gold in the event. Her 2024 season was particularly stellar, yielding both World and European titles to complement the individual sprint bronze medal she earned during her Olympic debut at Rio 2016. There have been moments where I’ve thought, ‘could I just, should I just, what if I just, don’t get me wrong. I’m incredibly proud of where I’ve got to and what I’ve done. I just don’t want to make those choices anymore to keep doing what it takes to get to LA.

Reflecting on her decision, the Leeds-born athlete explained that while she had considered training for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle, she ultimately chose to prioritize her personal life. She noted that she understands the immense commitment required to remain at an elite level for another two years and prefers to move on at this stage.

Originally a junior heptathlete, Marchant transitioned to cycling in 2013 after coaches spotted her potential on a static bike. Her career has been marked by remarkable resilience; she became the first track sprinter to return to elite international racing after giving birth. Her journey was briefly interrupted after she suffered a crash that required multiple arm surgeries, sidelining her for a year. Two years after the birth of her first child, Marchant won Olympic, World and European titles before a crash which required operations on her arm and kept her out of racing for 12 months.

Marchant returned to competition just six months after the arrival of her second child to prepare for the 2024 season. She successfully teamed up with Rhianna Parris-Smith and Sophie Capewell to secure silver at the Commonwealth Games in July.

Transitioning into retirement, Marchant is embracing newfound freedom. She highlighted the simple pleasures she is now able to enjoy, such as managing school drop-offs and taking her children to swimming lessons without the rigid constraints of a professional athlete’s diet and training regimen.

Looking ahead, she mentioned potential interests in expanding her small cake business or exploring opportunities related to the high-performance sports sector. However, for now, she is focused on the rare opportunity to reflect on her journey.

“I’ve achieved more than I could ever have dreamed of achieving,” Marchant said. “I’m really enjoying just being me.”
