I was proud I didn’t let it get away and was mentally strong. I’m one of the best players in the world. Everyone gives me a hard time and roots for other people, but I’ve come into my own. It’s my best season yet coming off my worst year.”
McIlroy, who had previously stated he needed a “heroic effort” to overcome his deficit, admitted he had opportunities to seize the lead but failed to capitalize. The Northern Irishman missed a crucial putt on the 14th hole while tied with Clark, allowing the American to pull ahead. “I can’t be too disappointed, I’m not playing well enough to be too disappointed to no win,” McIlroy said. “I had my chances, but Wyndham stepped up. The way he played the last three holes, he showed a lot of character.”
The final leaderboard saw Patrick Cantlay finish second at 14 under, followed by McIlroy at 13 under. A group including Gary Woodland, C.T. Pan, and Collin Morikawa tied for fourth at 12 under.
