Bruno Fernandes found himself at the center of attention during a historic night at Croke Park, where Manchester United faced Leeds in a pre-season friendly. The 82,500-capacity home of the Gaelic Athletic Association hosted its first-ever soccer match between English teams, drawing a sell-out crowd. The atmosphere reached a fever pitch an hour into the game when Fernandes was introduced as one of five substitutes by head coach Michael Carrick, triggering one of the loudest cheers of the evening.
The match was eventually marred by pitch invasions, as multiple fans ran onto the field in an attempt to secure selfies with the United captain. With the situation becoming chaotic, officials opted to halt the game at the 90-minute mark, bypassing injury time and heading directly to a penalty shootout. Although Fernandes missed his spot-kick, Noussair Mazraoui converted his effort to seal a 5-4 victory for United after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.
While the result was secondary to pre-season preparations, the intense fan reaction underscored Fernandes’ status as a hero at Old Trafford. This reputation was cemented by his performance last season, where his nine goals and record 21 assists were instrumental in securing a third-place Premier League finish and a return to the Champions League.
However, the 31-year-old’s future remains a subject of speculation. Following a significant offer from Saudi Pro-League side Al-Hilal last summer, United may face renewed pressure regarding their playmaker. Italian heavyweights Juventus and AC Milan, along with Galatasaray, are reportedly monitoring the situation, with Fernandes holding a £57m release clause applicable to overseas clubs.
The club’s management faces a delicate situation, particularly as Fernandes has entered the final year of his current contract, which includes an option for a one-year extension. While no agreement on a new deal has been reached, the player has previously expressed a desire to remain at United and compete for major trophies. Complicating matters is the club’s effort to control its wage bill, especially with Marcus Rashford returning to the squad as a high earner.
On the pitch, Fernandes is already building a promising partnership with new signing Youri Tielemans. The Belgian midfielder recently highlighted their developing understanding, which was evident during the Leeds match when a precise pass from Tielemans set up Fernandes for a shot that rattled the crossbar.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, and Lisandro Martinez were absent from the Croke Park fixture. Rashford and Mainoo resumed training on Monday following their World Cup campaigns, while Martinez joined the squad in Dublin on Tuesday. All three could feature in Saturday’s final pre-season match against AC Milan in Wroclaw.
Rashford’s return follows a loan spell at Barcelona, which opted against triggering the £26m permanent transfer clause. As he reintegrates into the squad, he will work under Carrick, who served as a team-mate and coach before his brief stint as temporary manager in 2021. Addressing the forward’s return, Carrick noted, “He’s our player. I’ve known him a long time and he gives us something a little bit different.”
The upcoming match against AC Milan will also see Rashford face Ruben Amorim, the former Sporting manager who had a strained relationship with the forward during his tenure. Amorim, who was dismissed in January, also notably struggled to integrate Mainoo into his starting lineup during his time at the club.
With chaos threatening to take hold and 90 minutes played, the match was called to a halt without injury time, and went straight to penalties.
Amazingly, Fernandes missed, although Noussair Mazraoui kept his cool a few minutes later to secure a 5-4 victory, after the game itself had been brought to a premature conclusion at 1-1.
But after the ‘will-he, won’t-he’ debate around the 31-year-old’s future last summer when the massive offer from Saudi Pro-League side Al-Hilal emerged, United’s resolve could be about to be tested again.
The place would have erupted if either Fernandes had not had an effort ruled out for offside, or his shot from the edge of the area had gone in, not flicked off the bar.
The hero worship was taken too far when first one fan, then another, then another raced on to the pitch to get a selfie.
It remains to be seen how United react if a bid is received.
Last December, Fernandes admitted to being “hurt” at being told by United officials it was up to him whether he wanted to accept the Al-Hilal offer.
It is thought Fernandes’ preference is to stay at United, potentially for the remainder of his career.
On the club’s previous visit to the Republic of Ireland in April, he said he wants to compete for trophies.
That situation is understood still to be the case.
United’s hierarchy may find themselves with a problem that won’t easily be resolved.
Certainly, Carrick won’t want to lose the former Sporting man.
For Rashford, it would mean an encounter with Ruben Amorim, who he fell out with within weeks of his arrival from Sporting in November 2024.
It had not been anticipated Rashford would return to United when he joined Barcelona on loan just over 12 months ago.
