Manchester United Eyeing Fulham’s Calvin Bassey Amid Defensive Uncertainty

Manchester United are reportedly tracking Fulham defender Calvin Bassey as the club navigates a critical period of defensive restructuring. The interest in the 26-year-old Nigerian international comes amid persistent uncertainty surrounding the future of Lisandro Martínez, who at 28 has openly criticized the club’s transfer activity after a challenging start to the 2026-27 campaign. According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United’s footballing department has been impressed by Bassey, and interest in a potential move for the Nigerian international is growing. Martínez, 28, criticized the club’s hierarchy after the 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atlético this month for not bringing in more players in the 2026 summer window. But that hasn’t stopped other clubs from taking an interest in the player, the player himself is reportedly keen on an extension.

Bassey, who will turn 27 in December, moved to Fulham from Ajax in July 2023 for approximately €21 million. A versatile left-footed defender, he has operated primarily as a center-back but is also capable of playing at left-back. He has taken on leadership duties as captain during a difficult season for manager Alvaro Arbeloa’s side. While his contract expires next summer, Fulham retains an option to extend the agreement for an additional 12 months. And he offers the same left-footed option on the left of a back four, plus Premier League experience, ajax signed Bassey in 2022 after Martínez moved to United.

Reports indicate that competition for Bassey is increasing, with Newcastle United, Everton, and several unnamed European clubs monitoring his availability. His profile is considered a natural fit for Manchester United, as he offers similar tactical versatility to the role previously held by Martínez, having joined Ajax as a replacement when the Argentine moved to Old Trafford.

The situation at United is compounded by current form, with the team sitting 16th in the Premier League. Following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on October 25—featuring goals from Rayan Vitor, Marcus Tavernier, and Evanilson—the club remains just one point above the relegation zone. Manager Michael Carrick faces significant pressure after an eight-game winless streak, which includes a 4-1 Champions League loss to Cesc Fabregas’s Como.

Martínez, alongside teammates Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, faces a contract expiration at the end of the current season. Internal tensions have escalated, with Martínez reportedly open to a departure following frustrations over the club’s summer recruitment, which has drawn interest from Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.

The schedule ahead remains demanding for Manchester United. After their upcoming trip to Chelsea, they face Roma at home in the Champions League on November 3, followed by a visit from Aston Villa on November 8. A high-stakes league match against Liverpool awaits on November 22, before the squad travels to face Sporting CP in the Champions League on November 25.
