Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia’s one-day squad for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe and South Africa. The experienced batsman, who served as a key figure in the 2023 World Cup-winning campaign, has been excluded following a period of poor form that has also placed his standing in the Test side under scrutiny.
In a move to usher in a new generation, selectors have called up 19-year-old batting prodigy Ollie Peake alongside talented all-rounders Joel Davies, 22, and Cooper Connolly, 23. Chief selector George Bailey emphasized the importance of the six-game tour, noting that the series serves as a vital lead-in to next year’s World Cup, which will be hosted in the same countries. Bailey added that the selection provides a fantastic opportunity for Peake and Davies to continue their growth and exposure within the Australian setup.
The 17-player touring party sees the return of Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, and Josh Hazlewood, all of whom missed the earlier ODI series in Pakistan and Bangladesh. While Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are included, their workloads will be managed, limiting their participation to the three matches in South Africa. The pace attack is further bolstered by Spencer Johnson, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, Billy Stanlake, Brendan Doggett, and Jhye Richardson. Adam Zampa remains the sole specialist spinner, with Matthew Kuhnemann omitted from the squad.
Australia is scheduled to play three ODIs in Zimbabwe followed by three in South Africa this month. This will be succeeded by a three-Test series against the Proteas in Durban, Gqeberha, and Cape Town throughout October, with the Test squad to be confirmed at a later date.
Looking ahead to the senior team’s five-Test tour of India in January and February, players such as Peter Handscomb and Nathan McSweeney will be aiming to make a strong impression. Simultaneously, selectors have named an Australia A squad for a tour of India later this month, which includes two four-day matches and three one-dayers against India A.
Reflecting on the squad composition, Bailey noted the balance between returning core players and emerging talent. “It’s great to have Mitch, Travis and Josh returning, then Pat and Mitch for the SA leg. This gives us our core of players mixed with some we think will continue to make an impression,” the chief selector stated.
