Marnus Labuschagne has been retained in Australia’s 16-man Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa, despite facing significant scrutiny over his recent batting form. The number three batsman has not registered a century since 2023 and struggled during last month’s home series against Bangladesh, managing scores of only one, 31, and four. His inclusion comes despite him being previously dropped from the squad for the six one-day internationals scheduled in Zimbabwe and South Africa ahead of the Test matches.
Chief selector George Bailey defended the squad composition, noting the logistical challenges of the upcoming schedule. “This is a reasonably condensed three-game series, on the back of six one-day internationals, with only short breaks between each game,” Bailey stated. He added that the selection was designed to provide the necessary balance and tactical options to handle the varying conditions expected across the three venues.
The tour holds historical significance as it marks Australia’s first Test series in South Africa since the 2018 “Sandpapergate” ball-tampering scandal. During that infamous tour, Steve Smith was removed from the captaincy and banned for a year for his role in the plot, while David Warner, who has since retired, was identified as the ringleader and suspended for 12 months. Of the current squad, only Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, and Matt Renshaw have previous Test experience in South Africa.
The selection committee has also signaled a focus on the future by including 23-year-old all-rounder Cooper Connolly, while Matthew Kuhnemann has been selected as the secondary spinner to support Nathan Lyon, edging out Todd Murphy. Michael Neser, who shares a South African birth connection with Labuschagne, joins the touring party to provide depth for the primary pace attack of Cummins, Hazlewood, and Starc.
The series is set to begin in Durban on October 9, with subsequent matches scheduled in Gqeberha and Cape Town. The full 16-man squad consists of Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Beau Webster. The report also notes that all-rounder Connolly’s selection is another indication that the 23-year-old is seen as a long-term prospect while Kuhnemann was preferred to Todd Murphy as the second spinner behind Nathan Lyon.
