William O’Rourke Ruled Out of India Series

Published: October 10, 2026, 1:40 am

New Zealand fast bowler William O’Rourke has been ruled out of the entire upcoming home series against India. The decision serves as a precautionary measure to allow the pacer adequate time to fully rehabilitate injuries to his left hamstring and calf, with national selectors prioritizing his fitness for the high-profile four-Test tour of Australia scheduled for December.

This latest setback delays O’Rourke’s return to international cricket on home soil, an appearance he has not made since April 2025. After missing the previous summer due to a back stress fracture, he had worked his way back into the side during the tour of Bangladesh in April. However, he sustained a hamstring tear during the third Test against England in June, followed by a calf strain during a training session in late August. With a back stress fracture ruling him out of the previous summer, it further pushes back O’Rourke’s hopes of featuring in a home international fixture for the first time since April 2025. Where he tore his hamstring on the final day of the third Test in Nottingham, before straining his calf at training in late August, he then played each of the three Tests against England in June.

Head coach Rob Walter acknowledged the disappointment of missing such a significant home series. He noted that while O’Rourke was slated for both the ODI and Test squads, the medical team determined that extended rehabilitation is necessary to safely manage his bowling loads. Walter emphasized that because New Zealand’s pace resources are vital for the coming months, the management is opting for a conservative return-to-play strategy.

The current schedule poses a challenge for the quick, who is now in a race against time to reach full fitness for the opening Test against Australia, set to begin in Perth on December 9. Walter expressed a hopeful outlook, noting that the ideal scenario involves O’Rourke returning to domestic action for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, ensuring he is fully prepared for the Australian campaign.

New Zealand’s busy schedule against India begins with a five-match T20I series on October 22. O’Rourke was not included in that initial T20I squad, which has already seen changes due to injuries, with Josh Clarkson and Blair Tickner replacing Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes. The T20Is will precede a five-match ODI series starting November 1, with the two-Test series concluding the tour in Wellington and Christchurch, starting November 19.
