The rumored trade deal between the Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals involving Hardik Pandya and Yashasvi Jaiswal has lost its momentum, making a move unlikely at this time. While the two franchises held preliminary discussions several months ago, those conversations did not lead to any formal progress, and the clubs have ceased active negotiations.
Interest in such a trade was partly influenced by the Rajasthan Royals’ existing depth, particularly the emergence of Lhuan-dre Pretorius. The 20-year-old South African, who has been with the Royals for two seasons, has been in stellar form, recording 465 runs in the most recent MLC campaign at a strike rate exceeding 176, which included four fifties and a century. He finished third on the MLC batting charts and played a key role in the San Francisco Unicorns’ playoff run, trailing only Matthew Short and Andries Gous while maintaining a superior strike rate. Although their strike-rates were lower than Pretorius’s, matthew Short and Andries Gous were the only batters ahead of him.
Widely recognized as a rising star in T20 cricket, Pretorius recently scored 226 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 179.37 during a tri-series in Namibia. He has maintained this momentum in the current SA20, recently smashing an unbeaten 188 off 79 balls for the Titans against the Knights. Despite his limited IPL experience, which stands at three matches—including two last season—he represents a potential internal solution for the Royals. Nevertheless, the franchise has offered no confirmation on trade pursuits, and Jaiswal remains under contract for at least one more season. Royals representatives declined to comment on the matter. Although there is no confirmation that a deal is being pursued, he could provide the Royals with a back-up option if the Jaiswal trade were to materialise.
Had the trade materialized, it would have marked another high-profile exchange for the Royals, who previously sent former captain Sanju Samson to the Chennai Super Kings last year for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. Currently, however, no such deal is on the horizon. With the November 15 retention deadline approaching, franchise-level talks are expected to intensify. Some owners reportedly consider traditional periods like Pitru Paksha when timing major business decisions; that period concluded earlier this week. Franchise-level discussions could gather pace in the coming weeks as the November 15 retention deadline approaches, as for other potential trades.
Separate from the trade rumors, internal sources at the Mumbai Indians have stated that the potential return of Rohit Sharma to the captaincy has not been discussed. The franchise is currently prioritizing its coaching structure and staffing decisions before addressing the leadership role. Including whether to bring in new coaches or retain the existing staff, before taking up the captaincy question, the franchise wants to finalise its coaching setup.
