The Men’s Rugby League World Cup kicked off with a physically demanding encounter in Sydney, as Australia secured a hard-fought 24-22 victory over New Zealand. The intensity of the match left several key players visibly suffering, proving the immense commitment of the sport’s top stars. There were plenty of other examples of that commitment – aside from the normal rough and tumble this punishing sport regularly delivers, and during the Kangaroos’ dramatic 24-22 victory in Sydney.
Australia’s Reece Walsh, making his return after an eight-week layoff due to an ankle injury, was seen doubled over and vomiting during the match due to complete physical exhaustion. His Kangaroos teammate, captain Isaah Yeo, displayed notable durability by choosing to delay surgery on an injured pectoral muscle specifically to compete in the tournament. The Kangaroos number one was playing for the first time for eight weeks after recovering from an ankle injury.
The physical toll was equally significant for the visitors. New Zealand full-back Kalyn Ponga bravely stayed on the field for 20 minutes despite a suspected broken arm. He eventually had to be removed shortly before Australia’s Jack Bostock scored a decisive hat-trick, securing the win for the Kangaroos. Much of the focus was on the star full-backs – Ponga and Walsh, but understandably.
Mitchell Moses also struggled during the contest, attempting to push through a calf injury early in the game before being forced to leave the pitch shortly after halftime. Both Walsh and Ponga, who have previously represented Queensland in the State of Origin, were central to the headlines following the grueling opening fixture.
