Michael Carrick Faces Uncertain Future After Manchester United Defeat

Published: October 25, 2026, 6:15 pm

Michael Carrick expressed his deep disappointment following Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday. This latest result has significantly increased the pressure on the 45-year-old manager as his side continues to struggle, having secured only one victory in their opening eight Premier League matches. The team currently sits 16th in the standings, trailing the league leaders by 14 points. Carrick ‘saddened’ by Man Utd situation after loss to Bournemouth. The Red Devils lost 3-0 as their poor start to the season continued – they have won just one of their eight Premier League matches so far and sit 16th – 14 points off the top.

Reflecting on his future after the match, Carrick told reporters to “see what happens” regarding potential discussions with the club.

He noted that he is not expecting any immediate decisions, adding, “It’s just digesting today; we knew it was an important day to try and get us moving forward and we haven’t done that. For me it’s just digesting that and the emotions at the end of the game is something I’ve not really had before.”

Carrick took interim charge in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim and secured a permanent position in May after leading the club to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification. However, the club’s recent form has been dismal; they have not tasted a top-flight victory since August 30, when they beat Ipswich 5-2.

Tensions have been visible within the squad recently, leading Carrick to drop captain Bruno Fernandes for Sunday’s match. This decision followed Fernandes questioning the manager’s tactics after a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como last Wednesday.

The club has also dealt with internal friction regarding its hierarchy. Defender Lisandro Martinez recently issued an apology after publicly criticizing the club, stating that he had expected more investment in the squad and “more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox].”
