Namibia Clinches Historic Series Victory Over Ireland

Namibia secured a historic 3-2 series victory against Ireland after a commanding five-wicket win in the fifth ODI held in Windhoek. This achievement marks the hosts’ first-ever series triumph against a full-member nation. The result was largely driven by a dominant bowling performance that dismantled the Irish lineup for 129 runs in 33.1 overs, allowing the Namibian side to complete their chase within 21.2 overs.

The visiting side struggled from the outset as Namibia’s pacers utilized favorable conditions to stifle the scoring. JJ Smit led the charge with a clinical 4-20, while Jack Brassell proved equally lethal, taking 3-15. Ruben Trumpelmann initiated the collapse by dismissing Tim Tector for five early in the second over. Despite a cautious approach, Ireland reached only 25/1 at the ten-over mark. Max Heingo struck immediately upon entering the attack to remove Andrew Balbirnie for nine. Although Cade Carmichael and Harry Tector attempted to stabilize the innings, their 29-run partnership ended when Brassell bowled Carmichael for 27. Ireland managed just 25/1 in the first 10 overs before Max Heingo struck with his first ball to remove Andrew Balbirnie for nine. Exploiting the assistance on offer for the pacers to keep Ireland in check, namibia made an excellent start with the ball.

A brief moment of aggression from Lorcan Tucker, who hit two sixes in a rapid 20 off 14 balls, proved insufficient as the innings crumbled during the 23rd over. Smit returned to take a caught-and-bowled wicket off Tucker before trapping Curtis Campher and George Dockrell lbw in quick succession. This surge saw Ireland slide from 84/3 to 84/6. Jordan Neill offered a degree of resistance with a counterattacking 33, but Brassell trapped him lbw in the 30th over, and Smit finalized the innings by removing Gavin Hoey and Brassell accounting for Jai Moondra. With Smit completing a three-wicket maiden to leave them in deep trouble, ireland slipped from 84/3 to 84/6. Striking four fours and a six, and added 28 runs with Gavin Hoey, jordan Neill offered some resistance with a counterattacking 33 off 25 balls. Brassell then accounted for Jai Moondra to wrap up the innings in the 34th over as Ireland lost their last seven wickets for just 45 runs.

Namibia’s response began positively, led by Louren Steenkamp, who found regular boundaries. Although Michael van Lingen departed for 15 after being caught by Harry Tector off Jai Moondra, Steenkamp kept the momentum going, striking two fours in the ninth over to push the total past 50. Jan Frylinck contributed two boundaries in the 10th before Matthew Humphreys clean-bowled him, and Steenkamp followed soon after, falling four runs short of a half-century. Striking two fours in the 10th over off Matthew Humphreys as Namibia reached 61/1, jan Frylinck joined the attack. However, his outing was short-lived as Humphreys struck in his next over, getting Frylinck bowled with one that turned in sharply.

The chase experienced a minor stutter when Malan Kruger was granted a reprieve following a dropped catch by Tector. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus then seized control, striking a four and a six off Gavin Hoey to bring up the 100-run mark in the 17th over. Erasmus contributed 30 off 18 balls before falling to Humphreys. With only nine runs required, Kruger departed to a catch off Hoey, but Zane Green sealed the series victory with a six in the 22nd over.

Brief scores: Ireland 129 all out in 33.1 overs (Jordan Neill 33; JJ Smit 4-20, Jack Brassell 3-15) lost to Namibia 131/5 in 21.2 overs (Louren Steenkamp 46, Gerhard Erasmus 30; Matthew Humphreys 2-48) by 5 wickets.
