The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is currently facing a precarious situation regarding the proposed white-ball series against India scheduled for September. Despite the board’s efforts to maintain optimism, the prevailing political climate between the two nations has made the prospect of the tour increasingly unlikely.
The situation deteriorated significantly following a virtual press conference held on August 5 by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from Delhi. This event, which allowed the former leader to address supporters, has been viewed by BCB insiders as a major obstacle to the series proceeding as planned.
On August 8, Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed publicly addressed the diplomatic friction, stating that India cannot expect a friendly relationship while simultaneously allowing the ousted Prime Minister to issue statements from Delhi that he claims undermine Bangladesh’s democracy and foster instability. These remarks, combined with the foreign ministry’s clear expression of unhappiness, have signaled a cooling of relations that directly impacts sporting ties.
The BCB had previously hoped to mend the relationship between the two cricketing nations, which had been strained earlier this year when Bangladesh opted out of the ICC T20 World Cup. While security concerns were officially cited for that decision, sources confirmed to that the move was driven by direct orders from the Yunus-led government, largely due to political rivalries.
Following the transition of power after the February general election, there was renewed hope that the cricketing relationship would improve. BCB President Tamim Iqbal had been working extensively to secure the series, recognizing the significant financial and prestige benefits that come with hosting the Indian team.
However, the recent diplomatic developments have left officials pessimistic. A senior BCB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed deep doubt regarding the series on Saturday. The official noted that the board had expected a response from the Indian side by August 28, a deadline that has now passed without communication.
“I am doubtful about the series now after all the recent developments,” the official stated. “I don’t think we will get any response from the other side, and truth be told, it was supposed to happen by August 28; how many days do we have left?” The official added that while the board had done its best to facilitate the tour, the matter is now beyond their control, leaving them to simply wait until an official cancellation is confirmed.
