Chelsea’s pre-season preparations have been defined by the arrival of new manager Xabi Alonso, though the club’s extensive travel schedule was finalized well before his appointment in May. The squad endured a demanding itinerary, logging 56 hours of flight time and covering 24,561 miles. This journey, which included stops in Sydney, Hong Kong, Jakarta, and a final match in Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia, saw the team travel significantly further than any other Premier League side, nearly doubling the distance covered during last year’s tour under Enzo Maresca.
Despite the grueling travel, Alonso has focused on establishing a culture of accountability. The 44-year-old former Spain World Cup winner demonstrated his commitment by running off jetlag at a pace of four minutes and 30 seconds per kilometer alongside staff members. This approach mirrored his earlier involvement in a staff football match before the tour, where he played on the winning side and provided assists for most of the goals, signaling a clear intent to avoid excuses regarding fatigue.
Tactically, the tour served as a continuation of the rigorous fitness work initiated at the Cobham training base. Before departing, the players underwent intense double sessions to build a physical foundation. Once abroad, the coaching staff shifted the focus toward refining key tactical elements, ensuring the team remained productive despite the logistical challenges of their global tour.
On the pitch, the results have been mixed, with Chelsea securing victories in two of their five pre-season fixtures thus far. As the team returns from their final stop in Malaysia, the focus now shifts to integrating these tactical lessons into the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Chelsea ‘s pre-season campaign was all about new manager Xabi Alonso but, in truth, the 56 hours spent travelling 24,561 miles by plane had been organised long before his appointment in May.
