Speculation has emerged regarding whether former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni sought to acquire a stake in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise. Recent reports claimed that Dhoni had expressed interest in buying shares, but that the management rejected the terms proposed by the legendary wicketkeeper-batter. However, a senior CSK official has categorically denied these discussions, stating that the matter was never raised with the team or with N Srinivasan.
Despite the denial of a new bid, records indicate that Dhoni is already a shareholder in the franchise. Although CSK is an unlisted company and its shares are not traded on the open market, they can be obtained through private, off-market transactions. Dhoni currently holds over one lakh shares in the organization. While this represents a stake, it is a minor portion of the overall shareholding structure. The public holds more than 30 crore outstanding shares, accounting for roughly 40 percent of the total capital, while the Srinivasan family maintains a controlling interest of over 55 percent.
Given the current market valuation of IPL franchises—with teams recently fetching prices exceeding Rs 16,600 crore—Dhoni’s holdings are estimated to be worth between Rs 2.6 crore and Rs 3 crore. This figure is modest relative to his broader financial profile, as the cricketer is estimated to have a net worth of approximately Rs 1,200 crore, accumulated over a 21-year career spanning international cricket, the IPL, and various commercial endorsements.
Dhoni remains a pivotal figure within the CSK setup, even after stepping down from the captaincy and not participating in the previous season. The franchise management is currently awaiting his input on key strategic decisions, most notably the appointment of a new head coach. Dhoni is presently in the United States and is anticipated to return to India around September 22.
Once he returns, the management is expected to convene to finalize the coaching staff and address potential player trades and transfers. While officials maintain that a coach has not yet been confirmed, sources indicate the team has identified an overseas candidate who is also reportedly in discussions with another franchise.
