The Chennai Super Kings have moved to reshape their coaching staff ahead of the 2027 IPL season, resulting in the departure of long-serving batting coach Mike Hussey. This decision is part of a broader organizational overhaul. Hussey, famously known as Mr. Cricket, began his association with the franchise as a player in 2008. Following a one-year stint with the Mumbai Indians in 2014, he returned to Chennai in 2015, eventually transitioning into the batting coach role in 2018 under Stephen Fleming. While he has been formally notified of the decision, he declined to comment on his tenure. And the Australian legend appears to have no place in its current plans, the decision is part of a larger restructuring exercise that the franchise is planning ahead of the 2027 season. After opting out of the 2009 season, represented the franchise for four consecutive seasons from 2010 to 2013, hussey joined CSK as a player in 2008 and. But it is unlikely to be the end of the IPL road for him. It is learnt that he has been in touch with a few teams. It would not be a surprise if he lands a gig in the IPL next year.
The franchise is currently undergoing significant personnel changes. Head coach Stephen Fleming has been replaced by Zaheer Khan, and bowling coach Eric Simons has been succeeded by Mohit Sharma. These appointments, along with future staffing decisions, are widely viewed as reflecting the influence of MS Dhoni. Further updates regarding the coaching panel are expected once franchise owner Rupa Gurunath returns from South Africa, following her attendance at the SA20 auction, at which point consultations with both Zaheer and Dhoni will finalize the remaining roles.
The status of fielding coach James Foster remains unresolved. The former England international, who joined the team last year, has been informed that a decision regarding his contract extension is currently on hold. Foster has not publicly addressed the development regarding his potential future with the squad. He did not respond to a query from this website.
Despite his exit from the Chennai setup, Hussey is widely expected to find new opportunities within the IPL ecosystem. Reports suggest he has already maintained contact with several other franchises. His departure is seen as a strategic purge by the management, even though he reportedly maintained a strong working relationship with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad throughout his time with the team.
