A brilliant all-round performance from Ashleigh Gardner guided Australia to a 40-run victory over New Zealand in the second T20I at North Sydney Oval on Tuesday (October 20). The win gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, securing the Rose Bowl in its first edition contested as a T20I fixture.
After New Zealand opted to bowl, Australia faced an early collapse, slipping to 41 for 3 in the seventh over as Georgia Voll fell for a duck, while Phoebe Litchfield—returning in place of Tahlia McGrath—and Ellyse Perry were dismissed cheaply. Beth Mooney led the recovery alongside Gardner, with the pair adding 60 runs for the fourth wicket in just 35 balls. Mooney scored 39 off 28 deliveries before Gardner took total control of the innings. She built a crucial partnership with Mooney before continuing to score freely after the opener’s dismissal.
Gardner reached her half-century off 29 balls before launching a death-overs assault. Her most explosive stretch came in the penultimate over, where she struck Jess Kerr for two fours and two sixes across four deliveries. Gardner was run out on the final ball of the innings for 84 off 45 balls, a knock featured 10 fours and four sixes that lifted Australia to 167 for 7. For New Zealand, Nensi Patel was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 30.
New Zealand’s run chase stalled early on a difficult pitch, reaching just 56 for 2 by the halfway mark as the required run rate climbed. Amelia Kerr top-scored for the visitors with 32 off 38 balls, but she struggled to accelerate against a disciplined bowling attack. New Zealand’s chase never gathered sufficient momentum.
Georgia Wareham swung the game decisively in Australia’s favour, taking 3 for 18 from four overs while also taking two catches and effecting a run-out. Gardner complemented her batting display with figures of 2 for 17, restricting New Zealand to 127 for 8 in their 20 overs and closing out a comfortable victory. Adding two catches and a run-out to her wickets, the leg-spinner finished with 3 for 18 from four overs and was involved in several key moments in the field.
