The camaraderie between KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal provided a heartwarming highlight during the fourth day of the Galle Test. Following a successful DRS review initiated by Padikkal, a relieved Rahul embraced his younger teammate with such enthusiasm that he nearly landed a kiss on his cheek, narrowly missing the helmet grille. This display of affection underscored the deep bond between the two, who have transitioned their long-standing friendship into a formidable on-field alliance for India.
Beyond the cricket pitch, the duo’s connection is well-documented among their inner circle. Friends of the Karnataka pair note that they are inseparable, often spending their downtime on overseas tours hunting for the best local coffee shops. They are frequently joined in these pursuits by fellow Karnataka teammate Prasidh Krishna, along with teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel. As one associate described, the group is known for roaming touring cities in search of quality coffee.
Their collaboration has proven highly effective during the current Sri Lanka tour, where they dedicated significant practice time to mastering spin bowling. This preparation has yielded immediate results: across the two innings of the match, the pair has combined for 227 runs. Individually, one has accumulated 211 runs, featuring a major century, while the other has contributed 117 runs, including a significant half-century.
Reflecting on their synergy, Padikkal noted after the fourth day, “Batting with KL, I think it’s always been enjoyable. I think I have played quite a few innings with him now, even with Karnataka as well. We have had some long partnerships. I think we play well with each other. I think it’s a good partnership that we have. I think he understands the way I bat, the tempo in which I bat.” He added that their mutual understanding helps them push their limits, stating, “And I do the same as well. So when you have that kind of chemistry, I think it helps in stitching that partnership. And really pushing the limits as to how far we can go. I think that’s something that he helps me with.”
The history between the two is extensive, spanning 27 matches for Karnataka, including six Ranji Trophy games, 13 List A matches, and eight Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy appearances. Their Test experience together is newer, with the Galle match marking only their second outing as a pair, following their debut together in Perth during the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Their professional paths also crossed in the IPL, where Rahul, then captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, specifically requested the management to acquire Padikkal in a trade that sent Avesh Khan to the Rajasthan Royals. While Padikkal’s 2024 season with LSG saw him score 37 runs in seven games, he has since enjoyed back-to-back title-winning campaigns with RCB.
Rahul expressed immense pride in his younger colleague’s development, telling bcci.tv, “Obviously, coming from the same state, Dev is somebody that I’ve seen come through the ranks from Under-19s and score tons and tons of runs for Karnataka and make his way up to Indian cricket.” He highlighted the effort Padikkal has invested, noting, “In the last couple of years, he’s been waiting for his opportunity and quietly toiling in the nets and trying to get better at some aspects of his batting.”
The vice-captain also detailed the mentorship they have shared, explaining, “We’ve had a lot of chats over the last couple of years that he’s been with the team as to what needs to get better, or what to expect in Sri Lanka, what to expect in the Test matches to come.” Rahul praised Padikkal’s adaptability, referencing his previous success with India A and his century in the warm-up match. “He’s someone who loves batting and scoring big runs, and I’m really happy that he could get his first hundred, and that’s really special for everybody. And I think he’s at a stage where he understands his batting really well and he’s scoring lots,” Rahul concluded.
