Leicestershire Cricket Club has been handed a 27-point deduction and a £5,000 fine following a ruling that their pitch for the match against Glamorgan, held from August 20 to 23, failed to meet regulatory standards. The independent Cricket Discipline Panel upheld the charge brought by the Cricket Regulator, officially rating the surface at Uptonsteel Grace Road as poor. Despite Leicestershire securing a 42-run victory in the contest, match referee Ian Ramage documented 43 separate instances of uneven bounce throughout the game.
Callum Lewin, the groundsman at Leicestershire, attributed the pitch issues to an unscheduled Bollywood film shoot held at the venue four days prior to the game. He contended that this filming activity prevented the pitch from being properly covered for eight hours while exposed to intense sunlight. While the Regulator acknowledged that the club did not intentionally create an uneven playing surface, they concluded that the preparation process failed to mitigate foreseeable risks associated with the scheduling conflict.
The disciplinary action consists of an immediate eight-point deduction, alongside an additional eight-point penalty suspended until the conclusion of the 2027 season. Furthermore, under ECB Rothesay County Championship Playing Condition 16.2.6, the club forfeited the 19 points initially earned during the Glamorgan match, resulting in the total deduction of 27 points for the 2026 season.
In an official response, Leicestershire County Cricket Club stated that it is currently reviewing the full written judgment and weighing its future options. The club maintains that it is considering all available paths forward in light of the significant sanctions imposed by the panel. The report also notes that accordingly, the club will lose 27 points overall.”.
