Maple Leafs Executive Andy O’Brien Backs Sergei Bobrovsky’s Longevity

Newly appointed Toronto Maple Leafs Vice President of Sport Performance, Andy O’Brien, has expressed confidence in goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky’s ability to perform at an elite level despite his age. Having previously worked alongside the veteran netminder during his tenure with the Florida Panthers, O’Brien credits Bobrovsky’s rigorous approach to physical maintenance and recovery as the primary factor in his career longevity.

During an appearance on TSN’s “First Up,” O’Brien emphasized that Bobrovsky’s disciplined training habits are key to his sustained success. The two previously collaborated in Florida, where the team secured two Stanley Cup championships with Bobrovsky serving as the starting goaltender. Following his time in free agency, the 37-year-old signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Maple Leafs on July 1.

Reflecting on the previous campaign, the veteran goaltender recorded a 27-23-1 record across 52 appearances. While he posted a.877 save percentage—the lowest of his NHL career—he remained a defensive asset, tying for third in the league with four shutouts. O’Brien, who joined the Toronto front office recently, noted that his decision to sign with the club was heavily influenced by productive early discussions with General Manager John Chayka and the team’s leadership group.

O’Brien brings extensive experience to Toronto, having previously contributed to four Stanley Cup-winning teams with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers. In addition to his new role with the Maple Leafs, he maintains positions as the Chief Performance Officer at Cizzle Brands and Director of Sport Science, Player Health & Performance at Junxion Performance. Meanwhile, in unrelated news, Janet Gretzky recently addressed public criticism regarding her husband Wayne Gretzky’s loyalty to Canada, following comments from Bobby Orr amid the 4 Nations drama.

The 37-year-old finished last season with a 27-23-1 record, a 3.07 goals-against average and a.877 save percentage in 52 appearances.
