Belgium head coach Mark van Bommel has publicly criticized Portugal manager Jorge Jesus regarding his management of Cristiano Ronaldo. The controversy stems from a decision involving the 41-year-old superstar during the lead-up to recent UEFA Nations League fixtures. Addressing the situation, Van Bommel remarked, “If you make a promise like that, you have to keep it.”
The tension began when Jesus admitted that he had promised to play Ronaldo as a substitute for 30 minutes during a match against Norway, an assurance he failed to honor due to the flow of the game. Shortly after these comments were made during a press conference, Ronaldo abruptly left the Portuguese training camp and departed for Madrid on a private jet. He has since stated on social media that he intends to disclose the full details behind his sudden departure. After benching Cristiano Ronaldo against Norway, Jesus confirmed that he had told the veteran star that he would come on as a substitute for 30 minutes, but he couldn’t keep his promise due to the game state.
Ronaldo’s decision to walk away from the national team camp carries potential consequences. Under Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) regulations, players who fail to attend scheduled training sessions can face disciplinary action, including a fine of up to €1,000 and a potential suspension lasting as long as six months. Any player who fails to appear for training could face a suspension of up to 6 months and a fine of up to €1000, according to FPF regulations.
The fallout has reached the highest levels of the Portuguese government. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has reportedly reached out to Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença to facilitate a formal meeting with Jorge Jesus. According to reports, the Prime Minister is seeking to discuss the circumstances surrounding the superstar’s shock exit from the Selecao squad.
Despite the off-field turbulence, Portugal remains in a strong position in the Nations League. The team currently leads Group A4 with six points, having secured victories in both of their opening matches. They are set to face Denmark as they look to maintain their unbeaten streak in the tournament. Having won both their games so far, they sit on top of Group A4 with 6 points. They will take on Denmark later today in hopes of keeping their unbeaten run going.
