New Zealand has officially recalled Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe, and Bella James for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia. This group returns to the national setup after missing out on selection for the recent T20 World Cup. The series, which marks the start of New Zealand’s 2026-27 international season, is a crucial component of their build-up to the 2027 ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in India.
Off-spinner Eden Carson makes her return following an extended absence due to elbow surgery that sidelined her since last December. With 51 international caps to her name, Carson joins a spin unit led by captain Amelia Kerr, alongside Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire. Reflecting on her recovery, Carson noted the patience required during the rehab process and expressed her readiness to contribute to the White Ferns environment once again. To be back in the WHITE FERNS environment is really special,” Carson said. “The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I’ve been fortunate to have great support around me and I’m feeling ready to get back out th.
The squad also features tactical changes following recent retirements. Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe have been brought back to bolster the pace attack after the departures of Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu, while Bella James adds depth to the batting lineup in the wake of Suzie Bates’s exit. Both Rowe and James gained recent experience with New Zealand A in Sri Lanka, while Penfold participated in Australia’s KFC T20 Max competition with the Sandgate Redcliffe Gators.
The team will face a forced change behind the stumps as wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze is sidelined following surgery on a persistent thumb injury. She is targeting a return to competitive action in early 2027, with Polly Inglis stepping in to handle wicketkeeping duties for this tour. Furthermore, the coaching staff sees a transition as Dean Brownlie, who served as batting coach for four years, takes charge as interim head coach following Ben Sawyer’s exit. Additional coaching support for the tour is expected to be announced next week.
Brownlie praised the squad’s blend of youth and experience, emphasizing the value of challenging themselves against a top-tier opponent like Australia. The full squad for the series includes Amelia Kerr (c), Eden Carson, Flora Devonshire, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Polly Inglis, Bella James, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Molly Penfold, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, and Izzy Sharp. And the balance of ‘experience and future-focus’, brownlie welcomed the for inclusions in the squad.
