Newcastle United have finalized the signing of Belgium international Matias Fernandez-Pardo, securing the 21-year-old forward from Lille for an initial fee of £51.4 million. The player arrived on Tyneside on Monday evening to undergo a medical examination and finalize a long-term contract with the club.
The move represents the culmination of a long-standing recruitment effort by Newcastle, which began during the tenure of former head coach Eddie Howe. Fernandez-Pardo aligns with the club’s current strategy of targeting high-potential talent aged 21 and under. His statistical performance last season was notable among his peers in Europe’s top five leagues, where he ranked second for big chances created (21), fifth for shots on target (30) and touches in the opposition box (184), and seventh for combined goals and assists (13).
Reflecting on his transfer, the forward expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating he was “very proud to be at such a big club.” He noted that discussions with head coach Matthias Jaissle were a deciding factor, adding, “He really showed how much he wanted me to be here, so I didn’t hesitate at all.” Fernandez-Pardo also acknowledged the club’s reputation, saying, “I know the club, I know about the stadium, I know it’s a fantastic atmosphere. I’m still young, I’m still hungry, and I want to make that progress with Newcastle. I can’t wait to start the wonderful adventure here.”
The transition follows a period of uncertainty for the player at Lille, where he was recently omitted from the squad for a 2-2 draw against Paris St-Germain and instructed to train away from the first team while his future was under negotiation.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle praised the new arrival’s versatility across the frontline and his technical profile. “Matias is a highly technical player with explosiveness in his game,” Jaissle remarked. “He can score and assist, he has courage, and he has the ability to take players on.”
Jaissle emphasized that the club intends to support the forward’s continued development. “We’re sure our supporters will enjoy watching him play.
