Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has launched a sharp critique of his former club, alleging that internal failings drove striker Rasmus Hojlund away. According to Schmeichel, the Danish international was the ideal forward for the Red Devils, but his teammates consistently failed to utilize his skills, often refusing to pass him the ball. Speaking on The Overlap, the former keeper argued that the coaching staff also contributed to the breakdown, failing to properly integrate or support the player during his tenure. Making it impossible for him to score, he believes the players refused to pass him the ball.
Schmeichel suggested that the club squandered a prime opportunity to build their attack around Hojlund, characterizing the loss as a strategic error.
He contrasted this with the club’s current situation, noting that they are now relying on players frequently sidelined by injuries. Addressing the club’s current recruitment, Schmeichel pointed to Benjamin Sesko as a player facing similar challenges in the existing system. Sesko has managed two goals in six appearances for Manchester United this term, accumulating just over 200 minutes of play, while Hojlund has tallied two goals in 11 matches for Napoli across more than 800 minutes of action. Despite playing over 800 minutes, hojlund has the same number of goals in 11 games for Napoli.
Amid these frustrations, Manchester United continues to search for reinforcements in the final third. The club remains interested in Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, following links during the summer transfer window. Additionally, Leeds United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has emerged as a potential target for the Red Devils, as the club assesses options to bolster their squad after the departures of previous attacking assets. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another forward on the club’s radar, and the Leeds United star has done well with the Premier League side.
