Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus is tasking his squad with significant improvements in their batting efficiency as they prepare for an upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. The opening fixture is scheduled for October 27 in Sharjah, providing a crucial opportunity for the side to address shortcomings identified during their recent sweep by India. With their batting unit falling short of expectations, afghanistan were swept aside by India in their last T20I series. According to i think we’ve got to develop our batting and the nuance of our batting so that we can just keep the volume of runs flowing,” Pybus, Ahead of the T20Is against Zimbabwe. With that benchmarking it’s just being able to see what our strengths and weaknesses are and I think for me as a coach it couldn’t have been a better gift,” he said. “It really isn’t nice getting beaten that’s for sure but if you’re going to have an opportunity to be able to benchmark where your side is at against the world champions with them playing at home it was really a fantastic opportunity.

Reflecting on performance data from the past year, Pybus highlighted that the team maintains a 43 percent dot-ball rate alongside a strike rate of 136.4.

The coach emphasized that while the squad possesses formidable power hitters and high-quality all-rounders, they must refine the nuance of their batting to maintain consistent run flow. He noted that the recent competitive exposure against India, while resulting in defeats, acted as a vital benchmarking exercise to identify specific areas requiring development against top-tier international opposition. Number one it’s one of the top sides in the world.

Regarding leadership transitions, Pybus expressed confidence in Ibrahim Zadran, who currently leads the T20I side. Despite the pressure of playing in India on batting-friendly surfaces, the coach praised Ibrahim’s ability to remain composed under intense scrutiny. He noted that while moving from player to captain is a significant shift, Ibrahim’s previous experience as vice-captain to Rashid Khan has served him well. Pybus believes that with increased time in the role, Ibrahim’s performance and leadership impact will continue to accelerate. According to pybus, however,, He was impressed with the way Ibrahim handled the responsibility in India and was not concerned about the opener’s returns with the bat after taking over the captaincy. According to we have a new captain Ibrahim and it was, dare I say it, a baptism of fire, you know, to go to India, play in Delhi in front of a packed house, and on a small ground on a perfect batting surface against the world champions,”, Pybus. “It doesn’t get any tougher than that and I have to acknowledge that he managed the side well and stayed cool under pressure.

Pybus also addressed external speculation regarding the relationship between the new captain and former skipper Rashid Khan. Dismissing rumors of internal tension, the coach described Rashid as a model professional who has been instrumental in supporting the leadership change. He highlighted that Rashid provides consistent strategic input and shares game awareness openly, which has been invaluable for Ibrahim as he establishes his authority on the field.

Describing Ibrahim as a calm presence, Pybus noted that the captain leads by personal example and clear authority. As the team moves forward, the focus remains on leveraging the talent within the roster to evolve their T20I identity. The upcoming series against Zimbabwe will be the next major step in that developmental process as the side seeks to translate talent into higher-scoring batting performances.
