Trent Rockets confirmed a top-two spot and stretched their winning streak to six with a hard-fought victory over second-placed Southern Brave in the Women’s Hundred on Monday, August 10. The result was far from certain early on, as the Rockets succumbed to 10/3, marking the lowest Powerplay score in the history of the competition. However, Ash Gardner first dug the side out of the hole, and Nat Sciver-Brunt later provided the finishing touches to guide them over the line.
Finding company in Bess Heath, Gardner played with composure, hitting the lone six of the innings—a strike over deep mid-wicket off Charli Knott—while finding gaps on the off-side. By the time Tilly Corteen-Coleman, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, dismissed Gardner, the Rockets had recovered to 63/4 but were still operating at under a run-a-ball, leaving the chase finely balanced.
Nat Sciver-Brunt, who was mysteriously absent at No. 3, arrived at the crease as low as No. 7. The demotion proved to be a masterstroke for a chase searching for immediate impact. Starting her innings with a reverse-sweep for four, she raced to 26 off her first 10 balls. She crunched three consecutive fours off Issy Wong, as the pacer’s slower deliveries failed to land effectively. She was eventually run out in an anticlimactic fashion while attempting to squeeze in an extra run with only one needed for victory. She later confirmed the move to No. 7 was partly tactical to allow other batters time and partly to manage her physical fatigue. Her contribution ensured the team overcame the early collapse with sufficient depth.
Earlier, the Southern Brave innings was top-loaded, steadily building to 52/1 after the first 50 balls. Opener Maia Bouchier settled in well after Lizelle Lee played the early aggressor, punching five boundaries. However, even as Bouchier and Laura Wolvaardt established a base, a lack of boundaries hampered their momentum. The Trent Rockets Women responded with 118/7 in 98 balls, anchored by Ash Gardner’s 37 and Sciver-Brunt’s 32, securing the win by three wickets despite the efforts of Tilly Corteen-Coleman, who finished with 2-16.
