Youri Tielemans has publicly apologized to Aston Villa after his recent remarks about his transfer to Manchester United sparked backlash from the club’s supporters. The 29-year-old midfielder, who completed a £35 million ($47 million) move to Old Trafford in July after United triggered a release clause in his contract, faced criticism for suggesting that his new side holds a higher status than his former team.
Reflecting on his career move, Tielemans had stated, “There are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.” While many observers acknowledge United’s significant global profile compared to Unai Emery’s squad, the comments upset Villa fans who felt the player was diminishing their club’s stature. The Belgian international, who joined Villa from Leicester in 2023, took to Instagram on Thursday to clarify his position and express his appreciation for his time at the club.
“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I’m grateful for the past 3 years,” Tielemans wrote. He added, “I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future. Wishing the club the best in the future.”
Tielemans played a pivotal role at Villa, helping the team break a 30-year trophy drought by securing the Europa League title last season, where he notably scored in the final victory against Freiburg. He described his transition to Old Trafford as the “culmination of years of dedication” since he first began playing football.
Despite the controversy, the midfielder is now focused on his upcoming campaign with his new club. He is expected to make his Premier League debut for Manchester United in their season-opening match against Hull on August 22.
