Trade discussions between the Detroit Red Wings and the Minnesota Wild concerning star forward Dylan Larkin have reportedly stalled. According to NHL analyst Kevin Allen, the two organizations reached a major roadblock after failing to align on the necessary return for the veteran center. Reports indicate that Detroit is seeking a specific package of assets that Minnesota has not been prepared to provide.
Financial constraints remain a primary hurdle in any potential transaction. Larkin currently carries an $8.7 million salary cap hit, necessitating that the Wild shed significant salary to facilitate a trade. While a one-for-one swap involving Matt Boldy—who holds a $7 million cap hit—would theoretically balance the books, Minnesota has reportedly shown no willingness to include him in the deal.
Larkin, who requested a trade earlier this offseason, is currently signed through the 2030-31 campaign following an eight-year, $69.6 million extension inked in March 2023. The contract includes a full no-movement clause, adding complexity to any potential move. Former general manager Steve Yzerman, prior to transitioning into a senior advisor role, stated that the organization could not guarantee they would honor the trade request.
Regarding Detroit’s strategic needs, reporter Helene St. James noted on The Jason Gregor Show that the Red Wings are prioritizing the acquisition of a center. The team has been actively seeking reinforcements at that position and on the wing, even predating Larkin’s trade request. This search follows a 2025-26 season where Detroit finished with a 41-31-10 record and 92 points, marking their 10th consecutive year missing the postseason.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Larkin remains a productive force, having posted career highs of 34 goals, 33 assists, and 67 points across 74 games last season. As speculation persists, Ansar Khan has suggested that defenseman Moritz Seider could eventually be tapped to wear the captain’s “C” for the franchise.
