Prominent player agent Allan Walsh recently confirmed via social media that Commissioner Gary Bettman is currently weighing options between Houston and Atlanta for the league’s next expansion site.
The financial commitment for a new franchise is substantial, with a total estimated cost of approximately $3.5 billion. This figure accounts for both the required expansion fee and the construction of a modern arena, a facility standard the league is strictly mandating for any new market. While the league continues to evaluate its options, Bettman has noted that while cities like Arizona remain part of broader discussions, the current focus is centered on the Texas and Georgia markets.
Houston has long been considered a premier destination due to its status as a massive media market. In June, the NHL entered into a formal agreement with the Friedkin family to evaluate the feasibility of adding a team in Texas, with both Houston and Austin under consideration. While Austin offers a growing population and a younger demographic, industry analysts suggest the scale of the Houston market currently holds more weight.
Atlanta, meanwhile, offers a complex history with the sport. The city previously served as home to the Atlanta Flames from 1972 until their relocation to Calgary in 1980. A second attempt followed with the Atlanta Thrashers, who operated from 1999 to 2011 before moving to Winnipeg to become the Jets. Despite these past departures, which were largely attributed to ownership and venue challenges rather than a lack of market interest, Atlanta remains one of the largest U.S. media markets currently without an NHL presence.
As the league evaluates its next steps, other voices continue to weigh in on the expansion process. Patrice Bergeron has publicly advocated for his hometown of Quebec to secure a team, reflecting on his childhood support for the Nordiques.
