India’s preparations for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka have suffered a setback with the news that Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the tour. The 24-year-old left-handed batter, who was expected to play a key role, was notably absent when the Indian squad departed for Sri Lanka earlier this week and has also been sidelined for the ongoing warm-up match in Colombo.
According to sources within the BCCI, the decision follows medical advice recommending that the player allow more time for biological healing. While his condition has shown signs of progress, doctors determined that he is not yet fit enough for the physical demands of competitive Test cricket, necessitating a gradual return to the sport.
Sudharsan’s withdrawal adds to a mounting list of fitness concerns for the Indian team. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is already confirmed as unavailable for the series. Additionally, Washington Sundar is currently managing an injury, though he remains in contention for the second Test. Captain Shubman Gill is also being monitored after sustaining an impact injury to his right ring finger during a training session, which forced him to miss the current warm-up fixture.
In the wake of Sudharsan’s absence, Devdutt Padikkal is the frontrunner to fill the No. 3 batting position. Padikkal bolstered his selection prospects during the warm-up game, where he retired hurt on 103 before returning to the crease to finish with an impressive unbeaten 142. The team management will now look to finalize their lineup as they navigate these personnel challenges ahead of the opening Test.
