Arsenal have completed the signing of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a deal worth £75 million. The 28-year-old was officially unveiled to supporters at the Emirates Stadium ahead of Sunday’s friendly against Borussia Dortmund. While he did not feature in the 3-2 defeat to the German side, the Brazilian is expected to make his debut in Wednesday’s upcoming match against Como.
Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his enthusiasm for the transfer, highlighting the specific qualities the midfielder brings to the squad. “I think he describes himself as a warrior,” Arteta noted, adding that the player possesses a unique blend of intuition, leadership, and charisma. According to the manager, these traits are essential to “ignite something different” within the team and push the entire organization toward higher standards.
Arteta emphasized that the decision to bring Guimaraes to north London was driven by a clear need for specific character traits. “We want to go to the next level and are very, very much convinced that we’re going to need players with such a personality, desire and character to push everybody inside the organisation to go even higher,” he stated. The manager also noted the immediate impact of the player’s energy and hunger during training sessions.
The arrival of Guimaraes significantly bolsters Arsenal’s midfield options, which already include Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, Eberechi Eze, and Mikel Merino. Despite this depth, Arteta hinted that the club’s summer transfer business may not yet be concluded. The match against Dortmund also marked a notable return to the pitch for captain Martin Odegaard.
Guimaraes was not included in the matchday squad for the 3-2 loss to Dortmund but is likely to be involved in the game against Como on Wednesday.
