Nineteen-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died following a fatal accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The Welsh rider was competing for the NSN Development Team when the incident occurred on the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe.
The Volta a Portugal, which commenced in Lisbon on 5 August, is a 10-stage race scheduled to conclude in Porto on 16 August. Following the tragedy, race organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation announced that the competition was halted, and the scheduled podium ceremony was cancelled as a mark of respect and mourning.
In an official statement, the NSN Development Team expressed their profound grief: “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today. Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.” The team extended their deepest condolences to his parents, Michael and Dawn, and his brother, Josh.
The race organisers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation also shared a message on X, offering their “most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his team-mates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones.” Portuguese president Antonio Jose Seguro noted that the loss had “plunged the peloton, the tournament and the host nation into mourning.”
Tarling, who competed on both the road and track, was widely regarded as a rising talent in the sport. He appeared to be following in the footsteps of his older brother, Netcompany-Ineos rider Josh Tarling, particularly as a specialist in time trials.
His recent career highlights included a third-place finish in the under-23 men’s individual time trial at the British Championships held in June. Additionally, he gained valuable professional experience by competing in the Tour of Britain just under 12 months ago.
