Liverpool Supporters Demand Transparency Over Potential Jeff Bezos Stake Purchase

Liverpool’s prominent supporters’ group, Spirit of Shankly, has publicly demanded transparency following reports that a consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is nearing a deal to acquire a substantial minority stake in the club. The group emphasized that the interests of the team and its fanbase must remain the primary priority during any potential ownership transition.

According to a report from Sky News on Monday, the investment group is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. The consortium is reportedly closing in on an agreement to purchase approximately one-third of the club, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) potentially set to make an official announcement as early as this week. FSG had previously confirmed receiving an approach from the Bhatia-led group back in July.

The financial scale of the potential investors is significant, with Forbes estimating the 62-year-old Bezos’s fortune at over $280 billion, while Saverin’s wealth is valued at $33 billion. Although Bezos has previously explored bids for NFL franchises like the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, he ultimately opted not to proceed with those acquisitions.

In response to the developments, Spirit of Shankly has written to the club requesting a formal meeting to discuss the implications of the sale. “Putting the interests of LFC and its supporters first is fundamental to us all,” the group stated. They noted that the reported 30 percent sale is a significant development, adding, “The ownership and custodianship of our club is paramount to SoS and all supporters.”

The supporters’ group expressed concern regarding the potential impact on club operations, citing examples from other teams where similar sales led to shifts in management and behavior that they hope to avoid at Anfield. This uncertainty arrives during a period of transition for the club, which won the Premier League title in 2024/25 under Arne Slot before his dismissal in May following a turbulent season. The team is currently under the management of Andoni Iraola.

Bezos is one of the world’s richest men, with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at more than $280 billion, while Saverin’s wealth is put at $33 billion.
