New Atletico Madrid defender Cristian Romero has moved to reassure fans regarding the commitment of his teammate and fellow Argentina international, Julian Alvarez. Speaking at his official presentation on Thursday, Romero described the striker as “really focused” and “eager to keep scoring goals,” despite the forward’s public desire to leave the club earlier this summer.
Romero, who recently finalized a 40 million euro ($47 million) move from Tottenham on a five-year contract, noted that he has spent the last few days observing Alvarez in training. “I see him as always, a guy who wants to keep scoring goals, keep entertaining people, and I see him really focused,” Romero told reporters. Alvarez had previously suggested that a departure would be in the best interest of all parties following interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid, but Atletico Madrid ultimately blocked the move.
Neither player featured in the club’s 2-0 La Liga opening victory against Malaga on Wednesday. Coach Diego Simeone has publicly stated his intention to build the squad around Alvarez while emphasizing the importance of Romero’s experience as a 2022 World Cup winner. Regarding his own role, the defender noted that Simeone has asked him to provide leadership on the pitch and assist his teammates. “I hope to be up to the challenge and carve my name into the history of this great club,” Romero added.
