Lando Norris has climbed to fourth in the drivers’ standings following a dominant performance at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. Despite securing his second consecutive victory to kick off the second half of the Formula 1 season—following his maiden win in Hungary last month—the British driver remains cautious about his title prospects. Norris stated clearly that he and McLaren currently “don’t have the car I need to fight for a championship.”
The victory, which saw Norris overtake Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli on track after a chaotic start, leaves him 83 points behind the current championship leader. Antonelli holds the top spot, while his Mercedes teammate George Russell is currently tied on points with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, sitting 59 points behind the Italian leader.
The situation draws parallels to last year’s dramatic season, where Max Verstappen mounted a historic comeback against Norris. At this same stage last season, Oscar Piastri held a 34-point lead over Norris and a 104-point advantage over Verstappen. Ultimately, Verstappen closed the gap to finish just two points behind Norris by the season finale in Abu Dhabi. While Norris’ recent form is of the highest caliber, he maintains that his current machinery is not yet at the level required to sustain a full championship challenge.
