Manchester City has finalized the signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in a deal valued at £125 million ($167 million). The transfer fee matches the British record previously set when Liverpool acquired Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle last year.
The 25-year-old midfielder is set to join a revamped City engine room alongside England international Elliot Anderson and Moroccan talent Ayyoub Bouaddi. The club has invested over £300 million to overhaul this area of the pitch, a move spearheaded by manager Enzo Maresca following the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders.
City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, praised the new arrival’s pedigree, stating, “He is a complete midfielder: technically gifted, hardworking, tenacious and a goalscorer.” Viana added that Fernandez’s experience in two World Cup finals and his success across multiple countries at such a young age demonstrate his elite mentality and technical quality.
In a statement released by the club, Fernandez expressed his enthusiasm for the move, noting that every player aspires to join a well-run organization like City. He emphasized his desire to learn from his new teammates and contribute to a squad he described as being built for success.
The move follows a turbulent period for the player at Stamford Bridge. Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for £106 million in 2023, had previously drawn criticism from supporters after expressing interest in a move to Real Madrid, which resulted in him being dropped for two matches last season. More recently, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso excluded him from the squad for the final two games as negotiations progressed.
Reflecting on his departure in an Instagram post, Fernandez admitted the situation had been difficult, stating, “The truth is, I haven’t been in a good place. Life is about making decisions, and right now I find myself having to make one of those difficult decisions.”
During his time at Chelsea, Fernandez secured both the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup. His international career has been equally high-profile; he scored twice during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup campaign, including a notable goal against England in the semi-finals. However, his tournament concluded on a sour note with a red card during the final, where Argentina fell 1-0 to miss out on defending their title.
City officials remain confident that the acquisition will significantly bolster their squad. “We are delighted to bring him here and feel very strongly he will improve our team,” Viana concluded.
