Bowling coach Morne Morkel has suggested that India will implement a rotation policy for the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies. Ahead of the opening fixture in Lucknow, Morkel emphasized that while securing victories remains the primary objective, the demanding schedule following the Asian Games makes a consistent playing XI throughout the series unlikely. Speaking to the media ahead of the opener in Lucknow, Morkel stressed that winning the games will still be the first priority but the quick turnaround following the Asian Games might force the management to avoid a settled XI throughout the series.

India’s T20I squad has maintained a rigorous travel and playing schedule since the conclusion of the IPL. The team has navigated tours of Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe, along with a home series against Afghanistan and a solitary T20I in Japan prior to their participation in the Asian Games.

Regarding selection strategy, Morkel noted that decisions rest with the coaching staff, captain, and selectors to field the most effective side for home conditions. “I’m pretty sure Gautam will look to rotate,” Morkel stated, explaining that management intends to evaluate the physical recovery of the players post-travel and address any potential jet lag before finalizing lineups for each match. “I’m pretty sure Gautam will look to rotate,” Morkel said. “I mean, that is up to the selectors, and obviously the coach and the captain in terms of the playing 11, or which playing 11 will be the best to win a game for. The guys just came back from the Asian Games, so we’ll assess how everybody is feeling after jet lag, after travelling, and then from there make a plan.”, in terms of the starting 11.

The series also serves as an opportunity for India to expand its talent pool, with the return of players like Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav to the fold. Morkel expressed enthusiasm regarding Mayank’s inclusion, citing his notable pace and X-factor as assets, and highlighted Prince’s transition from a net bowler to an international squad member as a testament to his resilience and work ethic. Morkel emphasized that the team prioritizes players with strong attitudes and a commitment to hard work.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is another player expected to benefit from potential rotation. Although he participated in the Asian Games and saw teammates like Sanju Samson shift to the number three position, India is anticipated to return to their primary opening combination for this home series. Morkel encouraged the youngster to utilize his time within the national environment to learn from experienced players. Even though he did feature in the Asian Games with Sanju Samson moving down to No.3, India are expected to go back to their first choice opening combination at home. Back-to-back setbacks for that, for a young player to get through that and then again find themselves in a situation to play for India just shows attitude, mayank had a couple of setbacks with injury.

Morkel underscored the importance of observation and mental preparation for young cricketers like Sooryavanshi. He frequently challenges younger squad members to study the processes of their teammates during training and batting sessions. By facilitating discussions on technical observations and tactical approaches on the bus or in the dressing room, the coaching staff aims to ensure that even those who do not feature in the starting XI continue to develop their game, adapt to international standards, and refine their overall cricketing intellect.
