Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the new head coach of the Delhi Capitals for the upcoming 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The former India skipper takes over the reins from Hemang Badani, who guided the team for the previous two seasons.
Ganguly has maintained a long-standing association with the franchise since joining as an advisor in 2019. His extensive resume with the organization includes serving as the Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s sides following his tenure as BCCI president. Most recently, he demonstrated his coaching capabilities by leading the Pretoria Capitals to the SA20 final earlier this year. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Ganguly remarked that the Delhi Capitals remains a franchise close to his heart. He highlighted his history of collaboration with the ownership, management, and players as key factors that make this an exciting challenge. He emphasized his commitment to building a fearless team and stated he is eager to work with the squad to foster a successful culture in the coming season. I cannot wait for all our players and staff to learn from Dada and am looking forward to seeing DC in action at the earliest.”.
The franchise, which remains one of only two original teams—alongside Punjab Kings—yet to claim an IPL title, is looking to end its trophy drought under Ganguly’s leadership. Delhi’s best performance came in 2020 when they finished as runners-up. Despite topping the table in 2021, the side has failed to qualify for the playoffs since then, finishing sixth last year.
JSW Sports founder Parth Jindal welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence that Ganguly’s visionary leadership will help the team mount a serious challenge for the title. He noted that Ganguly has always been an integral part of the family and stated that the organization is honored to have one of India’s greatest captains leading the dugout.
With the 2027 season approaching, Ganguly faces an immediate schedule of critical administrative duties. His primary objectives include finalizing his support staff and managing player retention strategies ahead of the November 15 deadline. Following these preparations, the franchise will shift its focus to the mini-auction, which is scheduled to take place in Goa in mid-December. Ganguly’s first task will be to finalise his support staff and plan the squad retentions before the November 15 deadline.
