New Zealand Cricket has named former Test wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling as the new batting coach for the men’s national team. Watling is set to join the support staff on November 16, beginning a transition period alongside the current incumbent, Luke Ronchi. He will officially take over the position following the conclusion of the Test series against India in early December, just in time for New Zealand’s upcoming four-Test tour of Australia.

Watling enters the role with a solid foundation in coaching, having led the Wellington Firebirds and, most recently, the Northern Districts Men. His tenure at Northern Districts saw significant success, including winning the 2024-25 Plunket Shield and the 2025-26 Super Smash titles. As a player, Watling enjoyed a decorated career featuring 178 first-class appearances across domestic and international cricket. He accumulated over 10,000 runs, including 18 centuries, and recorded 450 catches throughout his career before retiring from the international stage in 2021.

Regarding his return to the international setup, Watling expressed enthusiasm about his new appointment. He noted that the opportunity to work with the current group is significant and that he is eager to contribute to a squad that has achieved remarkable results in recent years. He stated that he does not take the responsibility lightly and is looking forward to the challenge.

Daryl Gibson, the Chief High Performance Officer at New Zealand Cricket, highlighted Watling’s proven coaching credentials and his deep-rooted connections within the squad as primary reasons for his appointment. Gibson described him as one of the most respected modern BLACKCAPS, noting that his approach to the game mirrors the team’s identity. Test captain Tom Latham also welcomed the move, asserting that Watling’s well-known work ethic and determination would translate seamlessly into his new coaching career, ultimately benefiting the team’s environment. So having someone like him come back into the group will be great for our environment, test captain Tom Latham added: “BJ is a guy who personified what it means to be a BLACKCAP. And I’m sure that same attitude will translate in his coaching style, there was never any doubt about his effort and determination every time he stepped onto the field.
