All-rounder Charlie Dean has been named captain of the England women’s team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Ireland this September. This appointment marks another leadership opportunity for Dean, who previously stepped in to lead the side during the ODI series against New Zealand when Nat Sciver-Brunt was sidelined due to injury.
England has opted to rotate the squad, leaving out several established stars to manage fitness and recovery. Notable absentees include Nat Sciver-Brunt, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell, and Amy Jones. These changes provide a significant platform for emerging talent to prove their worth in the 50-over format. Alice Capsey, who served as the reserve wicketkeeper during the recent T20 World Cup, is slated to take the gloves in place of Jones. Additionally, Charis Pavely is positioned to make her ODI debut, having already earned two T20I caps.
The squad also features the return of Ryana MacDonald-Gay, who has recovered from a lower-back injury that hampered her last season, following a strong domestic campaign with Surrey and the Manchester Super Giants. Left-arm spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman returns to the fold, looking to build on the two ODI caps she earned against New Zealand. Meanwhile, Grace Potts and Kira Chathli have been included as the two uncapped players in the group, having been integrated into the England setup throughout the summer.
Head coach Charlotte Edwards emphasized that the series serves as a vital transition back to the longer limited-overs format after a year dominated by T20 fixtures. “The focus has rightly been on T20 cricket for much of this year, but with a memorable run to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final now behind us, this is a chance for players to display their 50-over skills and bank some valuable experience for the future,” Edwards stated. She added that the series is an opportunity for talented cricketers to push for future selection by contributing to team victories.
The England squad for the series consists of Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kira Chathli, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Lauren Filer, Dani Gibson, Jodi Grewcock, Freya Kemp, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Charis Pavely, Grace Potts, Mady Villiers, and Issy Wong. The tour begins with the first ODI in Leicester on September 1, followed by the second match in Derby on September 3, and concludes with the final fixture in Worcester on September 6.
