Gerald Coetzee is set to end his ODI hiatus this month after being named in South Africa’s 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match series against Australia. The fast bowler has been sidelined from 50-over cricket since the 2023 World Cup due to recurring injury concerns. However, he recently regained match fitness by bowling in a four-day fixture against Bangladesh A, and head coach Shukri Conrad noted that he has been bowling with impressive pace.
The squad selection sees the return of veteran David Miller and Tristan Stubbs, the latter of whom missed the team’s most recent ODI assignment against India last December. Conversely, Dewald Brevis, Prenelan Subrayen, and Rubin Hermann have been omitted from the setup. Additionally, Aiden Markram will be unavailable for the series opener, joining the squad only for the second and third matches.
South Africa’s pace bowling depth faces challenges, as Kagiso Rabada remains sidelined with an injury, and Nandre Burger is also unavailable. Furthermore, Lutho Sipamla, initially selected for the recent tri-series in Namibia, was forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury. Coach Conrad emphasized that while Rabada’s absence is a blow, it provides a vital opportunity for other bowlers to prove their worth as the team prepares for the next World Cup.
The series is scheduled to begin in Durban on September 24, with the subsequent matches taking place on September 27 and 30. This marks the Proteas’ first home ODI engagement since hosting Pakistan in December 2024.
