India captain Shubman Gill sustained an injury to his right elbow while batting in the nets on Tuesday, two days before the opening ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. The incident occurred when he was struck by a delivery from pace bowler Mohammed Siraj. Gill left the practice area immediately, appearing to be in significant pain as he clutched his right arm.
Following the impact, Siraj approached the batter to check on his condition. Gill exited the nets accompanied by a team physio, who initially assessed his shoulder flexibility before applying an ice pack to the injured elbow. The captain then spent the next 45 minutes resting on a nearby cooler box. After 20 minutes of icing, the physio applied a plaster to the affected area. And spent the next 45 minutes there, the India captain stationed himself atop one of the cooler boxes lined up by the side of the nets.
Throughout his recovery time, Gill received visits from several teammates, including Siraj, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gurnoor Brar. He remained seated for an additional 20-minute period with the ice pack still in place. Eventually, he stood up and interacted with Yashasvi Jaiswal, during which he practiced a shadow-shot using only his left arm, keeping his right arm straight to avoid strain.
Approximately an hour after the initial injury, the physio provided another ice pack as a precautionary measure. While Gill did not return to the batting crease for the remainder of the session, he was able to gather his own protective equipment. He stayed on the sidelines until the conclusion of the nets, eventually walking away from the field carrying his bat and pads, showing no further signs of distress as he packed his gear.
