India reached 419-6 by the lunch break on the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Monday, bolstered by unbeaten half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel. After finishing the opening day at 300-5, the pair shifted the momentum in favor of the visitors with a resilient, unbroken 112-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
Pant, who had retired hurt on Sunday following a painful blow to his forearm, returned to the crease on Monday morning to continue his aggressive approach. Despite facing a barrage of short-pitched deliveries from the Sri Lankan pace attack and absorbing several hits to his body, he remained undeterred. His determination was highlighted when he pulled a delivery from Lahiru Kumara for a massive six that cleared the stadium and landed in the adjacent tennis courts, necessitating a ball replacement. By the break, Pant was unbeaten on 63, marking his 21st half-century in the Test format.
Dhruv Jurel provided steady support at the other end, successfully reaching his third Test half-century to remain 59 not out at the interval. While the duo dominated the morning session, Sri Lanka managed one breakthrough when Asitha Fernando removed debutant Saransh Jain for six shortly after the introduction of the new ball.
The foundation for India’s strong position was laid on Sunday by number three batsman Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a composed 117 to stabilize the innings after the team lost their openers early. India currently leads the two-match series 1-0, having secured a 165-run victory in the opening Test held in Galle.
